Matt Dicey, Winemaker, Mt Difficulty

Established in 1992, Mt Difficulty owns some of the oldest vineyards and is one of the most respected wineries in the Central Otago region of New Zealand’s rugged South Island. Situated in Bannockburn, a unique and rare area of extremes, Mt Difficulty has harnessed the once brutal terrain to produce premium wines at the forefront of Central Otago’s wine production.

Interview with Matt Dicey

Pinot Noir is my first love…which sometimes makes it hard to unwind why exactly. The challenge, the excitement, the fickle nature, the beauty. Reckless abandonment.

The truth about Roaring Meg… is still out there. There are many stories about exactly who Roaring Meg was, she was a colourful character from Central Otago’s gold mining period in the late 1890’s one of our favourites is that she was a particularly successful lady of the night. She was so successful that she had a creek named in her honour which then had a hydro-electric power station installed on it and now her name graces a bottle of wine in her honour!

I wish more people knew how New Zealand Pinots… can be both interesting and diverse. In New Zealand we make Pinot Noir, in Burgundy they make Burgundy. In NZ we are moving from an expression of Pinot noir to an expression of place, this is a long and complicated road and a path that we are enjoying travelling.

My biggest challenge is..our next vintage.
