Easter and Syrah

easter-and-wines

Throughout the world the most popular Easter symbol is the lamb. In past centuries it was considered a lucky omen to meet a lamb, especially at Easter time. And in a few hundred years later, it is a common tradition to have a whole roasted lamb on the table of an Easter dinner. So while at it, why not pair your meal with a symbolic bottle of full-bodied, tannic and complex Syrah. Here are some of our recommendations:

Alain Graillot Crozes Hermitage Rouge 2014

Region: France, Rhone Valley

Retail Price: S$ 66.00

About the Wine: Bright violet. Penetrating, spice-tinged scents of fresh blackberry, licorice, smoky minerals and violet. Silky and lively on the palate; flavors of fresh dark berries and spicecake show a suave floral quality. Smooth, forward and appealingly sweet, with a fine dusting of closing tannins and very good, spicy persistence.

About the Winery: Alain Graillot has been producing wines reflecting his integrity and high standards since 1985. Born in the Northern Rhone, he left to pursue a career in business, but returned home to his dream of creating great wines. Without the opportunity of stepping into an existing family winery, Alain undertook formal studies in Burgundy while seeking the guidance and inspiration of the best of the new generation of winemakers including Jacques Seysses of Dominique Dujac. He has now some 15 ha in Crozes-Hermitage itself as well as 1 ha in St-Joseph. He matures his red wines in one year old french oak barrels from Burgundy.

Cave Yves Cuilleron Crozes Hermitage Laya 2014

Region: France, Rhone Valley

Retail Price: S$ 63.00

About the Wine:  An open and pleasant wine. A charming red fruit nose with delicate floral notes. Supple, crispy and well-balanced on the palate. A lovely freshness which underline fine tannins.

About the Winery: “For three generations, wine has been part of my family history, on my mother’s and father’s sides. My paternal grandfather established the estate in 1920. By 1947, he was selling his wine in bottles. In 1960, my uncle Antoine Cuilleron became the estate manager. In 1987, when I took over running it, I decided to settle in Verlieu, my mother’s home village.

Without a rigorous approach, passion is not enough. And so I wanted to understand and control everything. To be sure my wines are totally home-made, I have rejected off-the-shelf ideas, refused to copy others. Since the start, I have personally monitored every stage of production, from vine-planting to wine-bottling. That’s the price you pay for quality.” – Yves Cuilleron
