Priorat, Spain

The best Priorat wines share a clear identity, usually with a dense inky colour and a rich texture. The Ilicorella slate gives Priorat its characteristic minerality, and there is a distinct fresnhness typical of Garnacha grown at high altitudes on red clay. Yet there is also a contrasting selction of soils in the region as well as a dizzyingly variation of vinyards - the slopes range from 5% to a precipitous 95% and rainfall varies from 450mm to 750mm across the DOQ (the top rating for any designation in Spain) across the some 600 growers and 99 registered wineries on site.
