Cousino Macul – Chile, Maipo Valley

Founded in 1856, Cousiño Macul is the only winery amongst those established during the nineteenth century that continues in the hands of the founding family, who controls 100% ownership of the company. We are a company with tradition, character and identity. The mission of Cousiño Macul is to produce world-class wines that are unmistakably Chilean, carrying the distinctive character of the Maipo Valley.
The name of the winery is derived from the family name of its founder (Matías Cousiño), plus the name given to the area where the estate was built, within the Maipo Valley: the company name implies “the Cousiño estate at Macul”. “Macul” is a word from the language spoken by the indigenous people before the discovery of America; the language is Quechua, and Macul in Quechua means “right hand”.

Varieties

All the vineyards are planted on their own root systems. The wines produced by Cousiño Macul are made from 9 varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling. Over 60% of our production is red wine. Vines for new plantings come from missal selections carried out in our own nurseries, for a period of 10 years. This selection has allowed the preservation of a unique genetic material of great value that was originally brought to Chile by Luis Cousiño in 1860. Including varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Paullac region in Haunt Medoc, Chardonnay from Burgundy and Sauvignon Vert and Semillon from Martillac in Graves.

Vineyard Management

To make world-class wine, grapes of the highest quality are required. With this in mind, the team in charge of managing our vineyard has to pay utmost attention to every detail. Opportunity, knowledge and experience are key: vineyard management requires a series of technical procedures that must be performed at specific times throughout the year. Our agricultural practices are consistent with the concept of “sustainable agriculture” or “minimal intervention management”, which allows us to reduce and, in many instances, completely eliminate the use of any chemicals.

The Cousiño family is committed to the environment and has implemented an integrated sustainable management system into their production processes; their mission is to minimize the impact on the environment as much as possible, while still maintaining the quality that characterizes Cousiño Macul wines. Based on international standards to limit the environmental impact of winemaking, they are proud to employ:

The winery is 100% dedicated to maintaining a harmonious, mutually beneficial relationship with its neighbors, the surrounding community and nature. We recycle all of the waste we generate; paper and cardboard are sent to SOREPA, plastics go with the intermediary Luz Valenzuela; through COANIQUEM, glasses are sent to Cristalerías Chile, staves are recycled with the company TINTO and all wine lees to Industrias Vinicas.
