France
Bordeaux, Saint Emilion
Roc de Cambes is a great terroir, situated on the Southern Bank of Bourg-on-
Gironde. In fact, it is a very similar terroir to Tertre Roteboeuf, except for its position near the
estuary of the Gironde (the largest estuary in Europe!). The soil is of the same structure (clay
and limestone), same Mediterranean micro-climate than the South of France but in a more
Northern location, which allows a lot of opulence in the fruit... And freshness of the aromas.
One main difference in character: Tertre Roteboeuf is more under the influence of
the inland (Saint Emilion dominates the valley of the Dordogne river), with more aggressive
heat waves, hence a little more spice, more candied fruit. Roc de Cambes has a huge
thermo-regulator from the water surface of the estuary, and is more characterized by red fruit
and berries. Apart from that, the two wines are worked upon and brought together in exactly the
same fashion, with exactly the same care.
These wines are very original and will show great diversity according to each
vintage. We do not make a “second wine” or mark down any part of the selection.
Price-wise, of course, there is an interesting repercussion for the wine amateurs.
The Appellation of Cotes de Bourg is not as well-known as Saint Emilion, although it used to be
very famous in the distant past. On the other hand, I bought Roc de Cambes ten years later
than I started working in Tertre, and its reputation is growing slowly but steadily. For value in
today’s wines, let’s read an expert again...
"These are some of the finest wine bargains of the
world, and quality for unheralded, less prestigious terroirs continues to merit significant consumer
support. ROC DE CAMBES, DOMAINE DE CAMBES, are amongst the best “Bordeaux’s Big Little
Wines” to be found on the market today..."
