Piedmont

Dominated by the Alps in the north and west, the vineyards of Piedmont lie in two distinct parts of the region: east and south. The climate is sever in winter, but there is a long ripening season in summer and autumn. The four key regions have all obtained DOCG status: Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara and Ghemme. Barolo and Barbaresco’s are made from the Nebbiolo grape and are considered amongst the top in Italian wines. The other more common red grape used in Piedmont, is Barbera while Moscato and Cortese are the most famous of the whites.
