PIEDMONTDominated by the Alps in the north and west, the vineyards of Piedmont lie in two distinct parts of the region: east and south. The climate is sever in winter, but there is a long ripening season in summer and autumn. The four key regions have all obtained DOCG status: Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara and Ghemme. Barolo and Barbaresco’s are made from the Nebbiolo grape and are considered amongst the top in Italian wines. The other more common red grape used in Piedmont, is Barbera while Moscato and Cortese are the most famous of the whites.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco 'Ronchi' 2008
This is a terrific set of wines from Angelo Rocca. The Barbareschi in particular have become much more refined over the last few vintages than was the case previously.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco 'Ronchi' 2009
"The 2009 Barbaresco Ronchi is a step up from the Ovello. Dark cherries, flowers, spices and crushed rocks meld together nicely. The Ronchi has a level of textural depth and power allied to a sense of vibrancy that is hugely appealing. At the same time, the essentially mid-weight style of the year at the estate is evident throughout. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. " The Wine Advocate

Albino Rocca Barbaresco 2008
" Bright cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors highlight this elegant and supple red, which stays pure and vibrant, with moderately firm tannins that are well-integrated. The intrinsic balance bodes well for a long evolution. Best from 2014 through 2028." WINE SPECTATOR

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello 'Loreto' 2008
Rocca’s 2008 Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto captures the personality of the vintage, but with more inner sweetness and perfume than the Ronchi. Sweet dark cherries, plums, licorice and tobacco wrap around the plush, creamy finish. This is a gorgeous, striking wine from Angelo Rocca.

Proprietor Angelo Rocca makes some of the richest Barbarescos in town. His Barbarescos show excellent integrity of fruit and a refined use of oak, even if they don't quite reach the level of his finest wines.

Albino Rocca Dolcetto D'alba 'Vignalunga' 2010
The 2010 Dolcetto d’Alba Vignalunga is terrific. It is a typical wine for the year, long in aromatics and structure, but less obvious in its fruit than some past vintages. Tar, smoke, licorice and blueberry jam wrap around the energetic, wiry finish. This is a fabulous wine for the dinner table.
