Hans Tschida Samling 88 Trockenbeerenauslese 2005 (37.5cl)

The Tschida winery is located in Illmitz, a world-renowned sweet wine town in the Seewinkel area of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, Austria. Hans Tschida specializes in the production of sweet wines and is counted amongst the best producers not only in Austria, but also internationally. Perfect harmony between fruit, alcohol, residual sugar and natural acidity is his highest aim – and even then, the variety must show distinction at the highest quality level. Each Tschida wine is truly individual, and it is clear to see why they are known as "liquid gold". A speciality of the winery is the production of Schilfwein, for which the grapes are dried on reed mats before pressing.
The region around the Neusiedlersee (Seewinkel, Illmitz) is one of the three great wine-growing areas (also Sauternes and Tokaj) where premium-quality Botrytis wines are able to be produced each year. The warmth of the Pannonian climate, as well as that of the vast, flat Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl) and its numerous surrounding tiny lakes, create in the Fall the perfect conditions for the development of the renowned “noble rot” – the Botrytis – on the grapes. The sandy, light soils deliver the necessary minerality and are perfect for the Sämling, Chardonnay, Muskat Ottonel and Zweigelt grape varieties. And the cool nights here are responsible for the incomparable acidity structure, which provides optimal balance to the wines ́ residual sugar. The area around the Neusiedlersee, with its fauna and flora, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reeds from the lake ́s shores are used for the production of Schilfwein.
The production of sweet wines is Hans Tschida ́s passion. Besides the Spätlese and Auslese wines, the high-quality Beerenauslese (BA), Schilfwein and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) are produced, mainly from the varieties Sämling, Chardonnay, Welschriesling, Muskat Ottonel or Zweigelt. The sweet wines are filled into slim, high 375 ml bottles, but are available in big bottles (Magnum) as well. The wines are matured mainly in steel tanks – and more seldom in barriques, because the varietal character and fruitiness of the wines play a big role.

94 points Tsichda’s 2005 Samling Trockenbeerenauslese – which I have not had chance to taste since it was bottled – boasts an uncanny balance of creaminess of texture with delicacy of touch and purity of fruit. Fresh grapefruit, vanilla and lemon cream, and herbal essences mingle in this irresistible elixir that finishes brightly, refreshingly, yet with a continued impression of creamy richness. The sweetness here is impeccably balanced as well, and I don’t doubt the wine will keep well for 12-15 years. When considered in conjunction with long experience of Alois Kracher’ wines, it seems clear that among all of the grapes that can figure solo in nobly sweet wine of the Neusiedlersee region, Scheurebe is singularly capable of excellence.
