There are three labels: Caledonia Australis (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rosé); Mount Macleod (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rosé); and Reserve (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir).
Caledonia Australis has 25 acres of Pinot Noir and 15 acres of Chardonnay ) over two vineyards around Leongatha.
Winemaker, Martin Williams MW, one of Australia’s leading cool climate winemakers has extensive experience in Australia, the USA and Burgundy in France. Martin is well versed in the foibles of cool climate varieties and is able to let the vineyard terroir speak for itself.
The Tilson vineyard of 10 acres (6 acres of Pinot Noir and 4 acres of Chardonnay) fronts the South Gippsland Highway on the boundary of the Leongatha township. The Notman vineyard is located five kilometres to the north of Leongatha. It is planted with 12 acres of Chardonnay (planted in 1997 and 1998) and 18 acres of Pinot Noir (planted in 1995 to 1998).
The Pinot is fermented in open vats prior to aging in French oak of which about 30% is new.
The Chardonnay is whole bunch pressed, starts fermentation in stainless steel and then run to barrel to complete fermentation. About 20% of the Chardonnay barrels are allowed to undergo a secondary (malolactic) fermentation. All the Chardonnay barrels are periodically stirred to absorb some flavors from the yeast lees. The barrels for both the Pinot and Chardonnay come from several coopers and the oak comes from several forests in France. Our estate wines spend twelve months in barrel whereas the reserve wines spend about 16 months in barrel.
The Caledonia Australis name dates back to 1839 when one of the first white explorers into Gippsland, Angus McMillan from Scotland, named what we now call Gippsland as ‘Caledonia Australis’. Caledonia is the Roman name for Scotland and Australis means southern. The Caledonia Australis logo, a Scottish thistle entwined with Australian wattle was designed to represent this relationship.
