Madre - born with the 2001 vintage - is the newest wine of the range by Poggio Antico. It received international recognition from its first release earning #77 in the “Top 100 Wines of 2004” by the US magazine “Wine Enthusiast”, beside also having been chosen as Editor’s Pick and included in “The Year must-have Wines”.
The name “Madre” comes from the homonymous property, which has always been part of the Poggio Antico estate. This location is facing south-southwest and it is well protected from the northern winds and consequently from the risk of late frosts. Its position – particularly favorable – and its average altitude (about 380 meters a.s.l.) ensure a perfect ripening of the grapes. The soil is rich in clay and stone and guarantees optimum drainage.
Madre vineyard, of about 11 hectares, has been planted partially in 1997 and partially in 2001, with mainly Sangiovese and, on a smaller surface, with Cabernet Sauvignon. The vine density varies from 5,000 to 6,000 vines per hectare.

92 points The 2006 Madre is 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 18 months in French oak. It is an opulent, totally engaging wine that coats the palate with generous dark fruit, sweet spices, grilled herbs and scents of toasted French oak. Finessed tannins round out this full-bodied, seductive red.
