Quick Overview

Jean Thevenet said, “It was a difficult vintage, but if you got it right and harvested at the right time, you could make really good wines. It was important to never lose your cool.” His 2004 Vire-Clesse Cuvee Tradition offers a mouth-watering nose of anise and white truffles. On the palate, this light to medium-bodied effort reveals flavors of honeyed apples, spices, minerals, and candied pears. Fresh, expressive, and long in the finish.

Domaine De La Bongran 'Jean Thevenet' Vire-clesse 2004

Domaine de la Bongran consists of 15 hectares spread throughout the foot of the Quintaine hills in the Maconnais. A family estate since a least the 15th century, its vineyards, devoted essentially to Chardonnay, have been passed on from generation to generation to vinegrowers and stone masons. The name of the area “Bongran” originally comes from “bongrain” (a wine with good origins comes from a good grain).

Jean Thevenet, the final link of the chain since 1972, together with his son, crafts exceptional wines on a chalky terroir which is said to be the secret of the Great White Wines of the Maconnais. Jean Thevenet is inspired by the traditional methods passed on by his father, drawn from his series of lectures, “The harvests in the Maconnais region of Clesse during the 19th century” .

On the palate, this light to medium-bodied effort reveals flavors of honeyed apples, spices, minerals, and candied pears. Fresh, expressive, and long in the finish, it should be drunk over the next 4 years. Incidentally, I’ve had a number of Bongran’s 1996 Macon-Villages Cuvee Tradition (91) out of magnums recently and they’ve all been outstanding, as has the 2000 Macon-Villages Cuvee Tradition (92) I’ve been enjoying at home.
