"Proprieta Sperino" is located in the small town of Lessona, near Biella, in the foothills of the Alps of Northern Piemonte. This is a region that boasts a long viticultural tradition and by the end of the 19th century, more than 40,000 hectares of vineyard were planted in this area. Later on, the region's growing industrialization, especially in Biella and in nearby Milan, Turin and Switzerland, led to a rural exodus and many of these vineyards were abandoned. The soil and climate of Lessona has always given a distinctive character to Nebbiolo grown here. Sheltered by the Alps, Lessona did not undergo erolic erosion, so its sandy, acidic soil, with a pH of 4.5-5.5, is very well drained. In these conditions, the vines put down deep roots in search of the mineral nutrients they require. The climate is dry with wonderful light, and cool night breezes blowing from the Alps to the north mitigate the hot summer days. This in turn ensures a long growing season, which results in a wine with fine flavours, a savoury and minerally character on the palate and fine, supple tannins, something that is of great importance for Nebbiolo. The estate is situated at an altitude of 280-350m above sea level and currently has 7.8 hectares of vineyard with a view to increasing to eight in the near future.

The Winemaker
|
|
In the middle of the 19th century, Casimiro Sperino, doctor, senator in the first Italian Parliment, dean of the Medical School at the University of Turin and founder of the Royal Academy of Medicine, founded Italy's first free hospital in Turin, dedicated to caring for the poor and the homeless. He quickly discovered, however, that the doctors made the poor pay 'under the corruption', he left the city and medicine to dedicate himself to viticulture at his property in Lessona. His son, Felice Sperino, also a doctor and professor in Turin, inherited his passion and dedicated himself to the development of viticulture in Northern Piemonte. He wrote books and articles on the disappearing indigenous varieties and was a pioneer in the battle against phylloxera, writing widely and researching American rootstocks. In the absence of an heir, his property passed to his relatives, the De Marchi family, who were doctors and lawyers in Northern Piedmont. For them, viticulture was always secondary to their chosen careers and by the 60's, the combination of a lack of labour and low profitability convinced them to abandon viticulture. When Paolo De Marchi, the grandson of the family that inherited Proprieta Sperino, began working at Isole e Olena in 1976, he always dreamed of revitalising viticulture at Lessona. The splendid hillside sites that were once planted to vines are now covered in trees and scrub. As a result, replanting is a difficult and expensive task. But given the history of the place and the potential to produce a great Nebbiolo, the effort is well worthwhile.

The Wine
There are two wines produced. Lessona D.O.C, made almost solely from Nebbiolo with a small amount of Vespolina, a very interesting local variety, and 'Uvaggio' Coste della Sesia D.O.C. a blend of 65% Nebbiolo, about 20% Vespolina and 15% Croatina. The winemaking combines the tradition of the area with the experience Paolo De Marchi has acquired in the past thrity years. The wines are made in the old, gravity-fed cellar, which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, and has been modernised where necessary. Fermentation takes place in short, squat, open upright oak vats. The wine is aged in a mixture of 15hl casks, puncheons (500 litres) some new and old barriques (225 litres).
