Italian Wines Classification

The classification of the Italian wines is based on 3 levels :

The classification starts with the IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica).
This quality label is allocated to the wines produced in an area quite wide, from approved grapes

Then come the wines which have a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata). This quality label is allocated to the wines produced in delimited zones (usually small or medium) and coming from precise grapes. They are produced according very strict production rules. It exists currently more than 300 DOC.

Finally, there is the quality label DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). The wines which have this label present a particular quality and they enjoy a national and international renown. They are controled with rules more strict than the DOC ones.
